Cold Steel - Battle Gim Sword
During a trip to explore traditional Chinese weapons near Shanghai, the Cold Steel® team visited a respected collector who owned an ancient Wu Jian sword, also called Battle Gim. The appearance and martial aura of this sword were so unique and impressive that this was reason enough for Cold Steel® to want to bring a reproduction of this weapon to the customer.
The Battle Gim, crafted by talented smiths, is made from Cold Steel's® finest Damascus steel. It features a broad, symmetrical tip and a slightly wider, heavier blade than usual. Due to the resulting forward balance, the razor-sharp double-edged blade is somewhat more suited for cutting and slashing rather than thrusting.
The pommel and guard made of blackened iron frame the beautiful wooden handle and are intricately decorated with a delicate design of traditional Chinese peony flowers and leaves. The same motif is repeated on the chape, throat, and carrying rings of the matching wooden scabbard.
Damascus Steel
The term Damascus steel, pattern-welded steel, or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered the former stronghold and origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a softer, low-carbon steel are combined through repeated forge welding and folding. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade higher elasticity and greater fracture resistance. With this technique, which emerged during a time of poor and variable steel quality, one can combine the positive properties of the different steels. Additionally, due to the various colorations with varying carbon content, impressive patterns of alternating layers are created. Not least because of these patterns, the Damascus blades of the Middle Ages were attributed with an inherent magic.
