Below, we have compiled all the important information on the topic of "daggers".

What is a Dagger?

A dagger is a thrusting weapon, characterized by its short double-edged and often symmetrical blade. The blade length can vary, but is usually no more than 40 centimeters. Furthermore, most edged weapons have a symmetrical handle.

Daggers either have a lentil- or diamond-shaped cross-section or are equipped with a triangular blade. The former designs are also suitable for cutting and can therefore be referred to as dagger knives. The latter are slightly more robust, making them suitable for use against light armor.

Whether Viking sax, Roman dagger, or medieval dagger: The dagger types offered today are often replicas of historical models from different cultural circles. However, in trade, one can also find daggers designed as tactical knives or dagger combat knives, which are used, for example, by the police and the military.

Daggers in historical context: Already used in the Old Stone Age

Daggers are among the oldest weapons developed by humanity. As archaeological finds show, dagger-like objects were already being made around 25.000 BC – for example, from flint, bone, or horns. Originally, daggers were designed as pointed thrusting weapons. Over time, however, they evolved into a double-edged bladed weapon that, to some extent, also provides the functionality of a knife.

  • From the 2. century BC to the 3. century AD, the so-called Pugio - a dagger with a wide blade, approximately 30 centimeters long - was standardly carried as a secondary weapon by Roman legionaries.
  • From the 12. century, daggers were increasingly used in medieval armies - as a complement to the sword.
  • During the development of a new combat technique in the 16. century, parrying daggers became fashionable, which were used to ward off the sword strikes of the enemy.
  • In World War I - more precisely in the trench warfare on the Western Front - trench knives were very popular. Corresponding knives were equipped with a hand guard that could also be used as brass knuckles in close combat.

What to consider when buying a dagger

If you want to buy a dagger, you should first familiarize yourself with the legal situation in Switzerland. The legislator considers daggers to be weapons, which may not be sold or imported into Switzerland without a special permit. The ban applies to all daggers with a symmetrical blade, whose length is between 5 and 30 centimeters. Of course, all models offered on Meister Messer comply with legal requirements. Our symmetrical daggers have a blade length of over 30 cm and are therefore, like all items in our shop, freely available for purchase without a permit.

The optimal dagger for you depends on its later use. If you intend to use the blade weapon as a decorative object or accessory for a costume, only the appearance is crucial. For performances involving simulated fights, a special stage combat dagger with an unhardened blade and a rounded tip is recommended. On the other hand, a combat dagger should be as sturdy as possible. Another important purchasing variable here is the blade material.
