Sting, the magical shortsword originates from the legendary city of Gondolin. Frodo's uncle Bilbo found the sword during a journey in the Troll Caves in Rhudaur, and it saved his life in Mirkwood during the battle against the giant spiders. Sixty years later, Bilbo bequeathed the short sword to his nephew Frodo. The blade of the sword shimmers blue when orcs are nearby. Elvish Tengwar runes are engraved into the blade and the hilt, which in Sindarin - the language of the Grey Elves - say:

Maegnas aen estar nín - dagnir in yngyl im. Translation: "Maegnas is a knife - dangerous in the hands of the unworthy." (= Sting I am called - I am the curse of spiders)
