Battle Merchant - Ulfberht Viking Sword
Before the Ulfberht swords, most swords were assembled from multiple parts. Soft iron bars were welded together with steel strips, forged into a blade shape, and then a steel edge was welded onto the sword. The Ulfberht sword was a great leap forward in both technology and design. It was not made from strips, but from blades made of good carbon steel with sufficient carbon content to produce excellent swords. The design of the sword was also a great improvement. The blade tapers sharper towards the tip than in previous blades. This brought the sword closer to the hand, making it faster both in striking and in recovery than previous blades
The etchings on both sides of the blade are exactly copied from the original, making the reproduction nearly identical. The sword is made of carbon-rich steel and is beautifully balanced. The handle is made of wood and wrapped in leather. The sturdy guard is made of steel and the pommel shape is the shape of the Brazil nut, which was very popular at that time, both among the Vikings and in the rest of Europe
