Rapiers with pronounced, curved guard baskets, also Basket papers called, have their origin in the 17. century. Back then, rapier fencing was an essential part of male education and often served to settle disputes among noblemen. Usually, the blades were provided with handles by local blacksmiths from Toledo or Solingen. This led to a variety of versions.
