You can find all the essential information about paracords in the following buying guide.

What is Paracord?

The term "Paracord" is derived from the English word "Parachute Cord" and refers to a thin core mantle rope, which traditionally consists of nylon. Nowadays, Paracords made of polyester are also available, but they are less elastic, which most outdoor fans consider a disadvantage.

The essential feature of a Paracord rope is that its inner core is protected by a sheath of tightly interwoven threads, making it extremely durable and tear-resistant. However, there are also versions that consist only of a casing and have no core.

Paracords were developed by the US military during 2 World War and originally served as parachute lines. After landing, the paratroopers detached the lines from the parachute, allowing them to be used for a variety of other purposes. Due to their versatile applications, Paracord has now also become very popular in the outdoor sector.

What types of Paracords are there?

The standard MIL-C-5040H, developed by the US military, defines a total of six types of paracords and also specifies the minimum requirements that each type must meet. In this context, for example, the number of core threads, the structure of the sheath, and the minimum breaking strength or load capacity are important.

Sometimes the paracords available in stores are even manufactured according to military specifications. You can usually recognize corresponding models by the designation "Milspec Paracord". But what is especially important for you to know is this: Generally, the breaking strength tends to be higher the larger the diameter of the paracord.

The most commonly used variant is Paracord 550 - also known as Type III Paracord. This has a minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds or 249 kilograms and consists of seven to nine inner strands.

What can Paracords be used for?

Since Paracord is extremely durable, it proves to be practical in numerous situations on longer trips into nature. There are countless possible uses. The following overview therefore only exemplifies what you can use Paracords for:

  • Fix items or attach survival equipment to a backpack
  • Tarp abspannen oder Zelt festbinden
  • As a clothesline or for hanging equipment
  • As shoelaces or belt
  • As fishing line or fishing net
  • As wrist sling

It is also possible to knot a so-called lanyard or bracelet from Paracord to always have several meters of cords with you in case of emergency. In addition, collars and leashes for dogs can also be made from a Paracord string. Paracords have even been used on a Space Shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.
