Blowguns

Even today, blowguns are still used for hunting by various indigenous peoples. In Switzerland, this is not allowed, which is why blowguns - as the English term goes - are exclusively used as sports equipment in this country. For many people, target shooting with a blowgun is a welcome change from everyday life.

In the online shop of Meister Messer, you will find not only blowpipes in numerous lengths and in different calibers, but also the matching accessories. What to consider when buying a blowpipe is explained in the following guide.

Modern models differ from traditional blowpipes

Traditional blowpipes are up to three meters long and are usually made of natural materials - for example, wood. As blowpipe ammunition, (poisoned) arrows and clay balls are used here, among other things. Corresponding blowguns are either made from an already existing pipe - such as bamboo - or by joining two grooved strips together.

For modern blowpipes designed as sports equipment, manufacturers, on the other hand, use different materials. The same applies to today's hunting blowpipes. Aluminum is mostly used, but sometimes steel or coated laboratory glass is also used. Unlike traditional designs, sports blowpipes are usually a maximum of two meters long.

In their functionality, however, the individual models do not differ: First, it is necessary to place the projectile in the tube. Subsequently, the shooter generates the necessary force to shoot the projectile by exhaling forcefully. Professionals can shoot very precisely at a distance of 10 to 20 meters. However, depending on the model, the maximum blowgun range can sometimes be more than 50 meters.

Buying Guide: How to Find the Perfect Blowgun for Target Shooting

Due to the variety of models, it can be particularly difficult for beginners to choose the right blowgun. The following overview summarizes the criteria that are especially important in the purchasing decision:

  • The caliber indicates how large the inner diameter of the tube is. While models of caliber .40 for example have an inner tube diameter of 10 millimeters, this is 16 millimeters for blowpipes of caliber .625. The rule of thumb is: the larger the caliber, the more force you need to accelerate the projectile. Therefore, beginners may prefer a low-caliber version.
  • The length of the blowpipe not only affects the required force, but also the target accuracy. While you need more force to shoot with a long tube, you can aim more precisely and shoot further. Since blowpipe shooting can be exhausting during longer tournaments, many shooters prefer smaller and lightweight models here.
  • You should also consider that there are different types of blowgun ammunition. Typically, darts made of metal or plastic are used. Metal darts have a long range and exhibit very good flight characteristics. Plastic darts are particularly suitable for training.
  • The scope of delivery varies depending on the model. With slightly more expensive blowguns, there is usually more accessories included than with cheaper entry-level models – for example, a sight and/or quiver. However, blowguns are typically delivered with at least a mouthpiece and darts.
