Cold Steel - Rapier with Fluted Guard
According to historians, the rapier first appeared as a new sword form in the late 14 century and spread throughout much of Europe until the late 16 century. In Spain, it was even demonstrably in use until the 18 century. The fact that the rapier remained the unrivaled civilian defense and dueling weapon for so long can be attributed to two main advantages: Firstly, its long, narrow, double-edged blade was ideal for delivering precisely targeted strikes from a distance. Secondly, its intricately designed hilt (which was constantly expanded - from rings, bars, and guards to finger plates and artfully chiseled baskets or bells) provided excellent protection and could confidently intercept or deflect blows.
Although the rapier technically never proved to be ineffective or outdated, it unfortunately succumbed to the dictates of fashion and had to make way for smaller swords.
Fortunately, Cold Steel® decided to revive this historical classic with its own modern interpretation designed by Dave Baker. The long, narrow blade of Cold Steel's® Ribbed Shell Swept Hilt Rapier is sharpened and beautifully polished. In the front third, it features a single wide fuller that ensures perfect balance. The hilt also reflects the finest craftsmanship and materials. The classic ribbed shell guard with its many bars and the knuckle guard guarantee unparalleled protection for the hand. The grip itself is made of wood, covered with deep black ray skin, and wrapped with decorative wire. It ends with a robust ribbed pommel that excellently balances the rapier's long blade.
