Description
Cold Steel - Italian Longsword with Scabbard - Man-at-Arms Series
This is the Man at Arms (MAA) version of Cold Steel's® original Italian longsword (Item No. CST-88ITS).
The medieval man-at-arms was a brave, loyal fighter full of martial heroism, skilled in wielding a variety of weapons. He was a veteran of countless battles, often the first to charge into combat, and although he was not a knight, he fought and trained alongside them as a brother-in-arms. In honor of these rugged, devoted mercenaries, Cold Steel® has created the Man at Arms collection. Compared to Cold Steel's® premium offerings, these battle-ready weapons may lack the usual gleaming blades and silver-polished steel elements, but in quality and performance, the MAA series products come close to the other products. The fully sharpened, blued blades are distinguished by their unmistakable gun-metal finish, which perfectly complements the black handles. And when properly oiled, they reveal their inherent, radiant beauty. The Man at Arms collection offers a selection of some of Cold Steel's® finest blades, but at a significantly lower price. If you've always wanted to own a Cold Steel® weapon but could never afford it, then this collection is made for you.
The era of the longsword spanned almost three centuries (from around 1350 to 1650), undoubtedly because it performed excellently! This sword featured a characteristic cruciform hilt, a long double-edged blade, and was equally suited to confront both lightly and heavily armored opponents. Its particularly long blade offered the necessary reach and leverage for powerful thrusting and cutting, while its long crossguard and heavy pommel could be used as striking weapons and also served to hook and unbalance the opponent or control their weapon. When it came to penetrating heavy plate armor, strikes with the blade were nearly ineffective and were often abandoned in favor of the so-called half-sword technique: In this fighting style, the swordsman held the grip with one hand and grasped the blade with the other to guide the sword tip more precisely and stab more accurately through the gaps and joints of knightly armor. This reconstruction by Cold Steel® was designed after the model of Italian sword design. Although the blade and point of balance are more geared towards thrusting attacks, the cutting edges are also surprisingly effective. Additionally, the simply designed, cross-shaped hilt with its long, downward-curved crossguard and balancing fishtail pommel offers all the possibilities of sword fighting.
The MAA - Italian longsword is delivered with a leather scabbard featuring blued steel fittings.
1090 Carbon Steel
The carbon steel 1090 is an excellent choice for larger fixed blades. It sharpens easily and retains this sharpness, yet remains tough enough to withstand even the most brutal stress tests. In short: a good all-purpose carbon steel that remains very durable even under heavy use.
