Description
Battle Merchant - Great Pot Helm of William de Staunton
- Battle-ready -
This helmet is a reconstruction based on a stone relief of William de Staunton. The relief is dated to 1326 and is located in the church of Staunton, Norfolkshire, England
The so-called 'Big Helmets' (in Eng. grossartige Helme) were often worn over a smaller, lighter helmet (e.g. worn (brain caps). They were widespread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Numerous contemporary illustrations (miniatures) and finds from Germany, Flanders, England, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, etc. demonstrate the popularity of this type of helmet. These helmets were used, among other occasions, in the battles of Crecy (1356346) and Poitiers (1356)
The helmet features a comfortable leather inlay with chin straps
