Hunting in Switzerland: Explaining the legal situation

Before you are allowed to go hunting in Switzerland, you must pass a proficiency test. Testing hunters is the responsibility of the cantonal hunting authorities. You also need a hunting permit. However, obtaining one is likely to prove difficult in most cases.

In some cantons, there is basically the possibility to acquire a so-called hunting license for the entire canton area (with the exception of designated hunting ban areas). Such a license allows the hunting of a certain number of animals. In cantons that have opted for the territory hunting system, the hunting rights are leased, usually for eight years. In the canton of Geneva, private individuals are not allowed to hunt at all.

Hunting with crossbow and bow prohibited here

In Switzerland, hunting with crossbows and bows is not allowed. These are classified as "tools prohibited for hunting" in the hunting ordinance. However, you can find more than 100 clubs in this country where you can learn or practice shooting. In some other countries - such as France, Denmark, Canada, and some US states - crossbows and/or bows can be used as hunting weapons.

But what about shooting on private property in Switzerland? On private land, you are generally allowed to shoot with a crossbow or a bow. However, there are also municipalities whose police regulations state that such long-range weapons may only be used on special facilities.

Crossbows: Becoming increasingly popular as a sports equipment

The crossbow shooting associated with precision sports is becoming increasingly popular in Switzerland. At Meister Messer, you can get high-quality crossbows in numerous designs. We offer both recurve and compound crossbows, as well as accessories such as crossbow bolts, replacement strings, and cocking aids in our range.

If you have no experience in crossbow shooting, a recurve crossbow is more suitable due to its simpler construction and lower maintenance requirements. In addition, the significantly lower acquisition costs speak in favor of such a model. Experienced shooters looking for a high-tech sports device, on the other hand, are better off with a compound crossbow. With such a crossbow, you can not only cock it more easily but also shoot more precisely.

Archery: Bows and arrows for sports and hobby shooters

While bows were primarily used as hunting weapons and by the military in the past, nowadays they are mainly used as a sports equipment. Since 1972, archery has been a consistent part of the Olympic Games. Particularly in some Asian countries - such as Korea and China - archery has significantly gained popularity in recent years.

Modern sports and hunting bows, like historical models, always consist of a riser, limbs, and the string. However, high-tech models are rarely made of wood. Most manufacturers instead use fiberglass- or carbon fiber-reinforced plastic composites. At Meister Messer, you will find both classic recurve bows and compound bows, as well as survival bows. In our online shop, you can also get accessories such as arrows, shooting gloves, and sights.

Crossbow pistols: The little sisters of the crossbow

Crossbow pistols work on the same principle as ordinary crossbows, but are slightly smaller and lighter. Due to the more compact design, the draw weight is also lower. You therefore need to apply significantly less force to cock a crossbow pistol. Nevertheless, the models offered on Meister Messer achieve arrow speeds of around 150 to 240 fps or 165 to 260 kilometers per hour.

Unlike the significantly more powerful crossbows, crossbow pistols are particularly suitable for shooting practice and shooting in leisure time. Consequently, the purchase of such a mini crossbow is especially suitable for beginners and individuals who want to train their shooting skills.

Blowpipes: Used worldwide as a sports equipment

Originally, blowpipes were used by indigenous peoples for hunting. In modern times, the so-called blowguns are mainly found in the sports sector. While traditional models are made of wood or bamboo, modern versions are mostly made of high-quality aluminum, but sometimes also of glass or plastic.

At Meister Messer, blowpipes in a variety of designs are available. For those who are just starting with blowgun shooting, models with an inner diameter of only 10 millimeters and a total length of 45 to 75 centimeters are suitable. If experience is already present, a longer blowpipe with a larger inner diameter is also suitable.

Slingshots: Sports slingshots and slings for target shooting

Slingshots or slingshots you may know from your childhood. The simple mechanical weapons are sold in stores as sports equipment with which you can shoot at targets. Since the projectiles can reach very high speeds and cause serious damage, you should never aim slingshots at other people.

At Meister Messer you can purchase high-quality slingshots at affordable prices. For example, we offer models from the Italian craftsmanship of Lu.M.B.Ro and from Haller as well as Man Kung. In addition, our range also includes replacement rubbers and ammunition.
