What is a rapier?
In the German-speaking world, the term "Degen" refers to different types of bladed weapons depending on the historical context. Nowadays, the term is mainly associated with sports, fencing, and officer's swords. However, the word first appeared in usage in the 14th century. Initially, it referred to daggers, later (16th and 17th centuries) to swords in general.
A characteristic feature of edged weapons is their long and narrow blade, which is straight and single- or double-edged depending on the design.
