Rapiers & Small Swords

1-12 of 32

Rapiers and daggers are variations of classic swords that were developed towards the end of the Middle Ages. With the increasing use of firearms, the elegant and less cumbersome edged weapons were used more and more frequently. At the same time, the often elaborately decorated blade weapons were considered status symbols among nobles. Nowadays, rapiers and daggers are mainly used for sport fencing, but also, for example, as decorative objects and in reenactments.

If you want to buy a rapier or a sword, Meister Messer is the right contact. Our range includes both replicas and modern interpretations of classic models. All you need to know about rapiers and swords can be found below.

What is a rapier?

In the German-speaking world, the term "Degen" refers to different types of bladed weapons depending on the historical context. Nowadays, the term is mainly associated with sports, fencing, and officer's swords. However, the word first appeared in usage in the 14th century. Initially, it referred to daggers, later (16th and 17th centuries) to swords in general.

A characteristic feature of edged weapons is their long and narrow blade, which is straight and single- or double-edged depending on the design. The commonality among all weapons referred to as rapiers is that they are primarily suitable for thrusting techniques. The only exception was models produced for the military, which were significantly heavier and therefore also suitable for cuts.

What distinguishes a rapier?

Rapiers have been common in the European region since the beginning of the 16. century. They also feature a long and straight blade with a pointed tip, which is slimmer than that of classical longswords. This naturally raises the question: What sets a rapier apart from a foil? The main difference lies in the fact that rapiers are also designed for cuts. Additionally, they typically have a slightly narrower blade than foils.

The different handle shapes

The handle of a rapier or sword can be designed very differently depending on the model. In the market, you can find models with a simple crossguard or a knuckle bow as well as those with a half or full basket hilt. However, there are also designs that are equipped with a one- or two-sided knuckle guard or a grip ring, and sometimes even with side rings.

Buy Rapiers and Swords: What to Look Out For

The model you ultimately choose depends primarily on personal taste. However, there are some things you should consider before making a purchase. The intended purpose is crucial above all:

  • Are you looking to acquire a collector's item? The blade weapon is intended to serve as a decorative object in your own four walls? Do you want to complete a costume – for example, for the theater – with a rapier or sword? In all these cases, it is sufficient to choose a model that visually meets your personal preferences.
  • If, on the other hand, you are looking for a rapier or a sword for stage combat – for example, for reenactment – you should make sure that the edged weapon is actually suitable for this purpose. This is not the case for all of the swords offered on the market.
  • If you are interested in fencing, you will need a special piece of sports equipment that complies with the applicable equipment regulations. The regulations set by the International Fencing Federation (FIE) specify, for example, a uniform blade length of 90 centimeters. In addition, not all blade materials are allowed.
