What are LARP weapons?

The term LARP stands for "Live Action Role Playing". This refers to live role-playing games in which participants embody a game character or persona themselves. Most LARP events can be classified into the fantasy genre. However, there are many other genres as well, such as Western, Science Fiction, and Steampunk.

LARP weapons are replicas of real weapons made of soft materials, which look exactly the same or very similar to the original or the template, but are designed for the safe simulation of real battles. In general, these are slashing or stabbing weapons - so melee weapons like short swords, pirate sabers, or corsair boarding knives.

What are LARP weapons made of?

LARP weapons almost always consist of a core rod that is wrapped with a padding material. Manufacturers typically use fiberglass for the core of LARP weapons, as it is both durable and flexible. Various types of foam are used for padding.

A painted outer layer - usually made of latex - ensures an authentic color scheme and appropriate shading. At the same time, it contributes to a longer durability of the padded weapon. To ensure that the weapon's handle fits well in the hand and is non-slip, it is often wrapped in leather. There are two different manufacturing processes for foam LARP weapons. The foam is either applied in layers around the core or by foaming.

Larger manufacturers primarily use the second method for several reasons: On the one hand, padding cast from a single piece is more durable than layers glued together. On the other hand, this manufacturing method results in a very realistic surface structure that only needs to be painted and not additionally coated with latex.

Buying LARP weapons: What you should pay attention to

The optimal foam weapon depends mainly on what costume you are wearing or what role you are playing. So make sure that the LARP weapon matches the chosen character. If you want to embody a Viking but carry a Roman weapon, you are inauthentic. For example, if you want to show up at the upcoming costume party as Captain Jack Sparrow, it is therefore more appropriate to use a pirate saber than a knight's sword.

Care instructions for LARP weapons

To ensure that you have as much fun as possible with your LARP weapon, it is recommended to treat it with a silicone spray or oil after each use. In addition, the padded weapon should not be exposed to heat or extreme sunlight. Otherwise, there is a risk that the foam will deform or the adhesive will lose its adhesion. Furthermore, it is advisable to keep the padded weapon clean by promptly removing any significant dirt.

LARP weapons coated with latex should also not be stored in a damp environment for an extended period of time. Latex is an organic material that can decompose in a warm and humid climate. In general, it is recommended to store them in a dry place, ideally with a consistently moderate temperature and not exposed to direct sunlight.
