Historical Axes

Axes have been used as tools and weapons since ancient times, but in the past they were also considered status symbols or cult objects. The appearance and shape of historical axes varied depending on the region and area of use. Replicas of such models are particularly popular among collectors.

In addition to a wide range of ordinary knives and axes, the Meister Messer online shop also offers replicas of numerous historical axe models. Whether you are looking for a historical Viking axe or are interested in a historical battle axe, you will certainly find what you are looking for at Meister Messer.

What types of historical axes are there?

Whether modern or historical axe: Their general structure always remains the same. An axe always consists of a piece of metal with a forged blade. The element, also known as the axe body, has an eye through which it is attached to a handle. In most cases, tough hardwood is used for the axe handle - in Europe mainly ash, in America usually hickory.

Replicas of historical axes are usually based on archaeological finds. Unlike the originals, however, the replicas are typically produced using modern methods. Additionally, they often incorporate steel grades commonly used in modern times, which contribute to the axe's durability. Depending on the design, these reproductions may even be suitable for everyday use.

In the various epochs of human history, a wide variety of axes were developed and used. Therefore, there is a whole range of historical axe shapes. Below we introduce two of the most well-known types in a bit more detail.

Viking Axes

Among the Vikings, the axe was considered the most important weapon alongside the spear, mainly for two reasons: On the one hand, not too much forging skill was required to produce the axe head. On the other hand, only a few men could afford an expensive sword.

During the early Viking Age, simple working axes were primarily used, but later on, the seafarers developed special war or battle axes. The historical axes were sometimes adorned with intricate runes and/or a leather wrapping, a feature that is also true for numerous replicas.

Medieval Axes

In the Middle Ages, axes were used in various cultures. An example of this is the Franks, who used a throwing axe known as a Francisca. The characteristic feature of this axe is its S-shaped curved head.

Some soldiers used oversized battle axes, which were extremely effective. Riders, on the other hand, relied on much more compact versions. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the weapons were often expanded with spikes or flanges due to increasingly better knight armor. However, from the end of the 16. century, battle axes lost importance as the military increasingly focused on the use of firearms.
