Interesting facts about archery

Archaeological finds indicate that humanity has been using bows and arrows for at least 14.000 years. Originally, bows served as a pure hunting weapon, later they were also of military significance as a long-range weapon. In the late Middle Ages, crossbows and firearms increasingly displaced bows and arrows.

Even today, hunting with bows is still practiced - but with models that correspond to the current state of technology, i.e. made of modern materials and offering high precision. However, bow hunting is only allowed in a few countries, for example in France, Spain, Hungary, and the USA.

In Switzerland, bows as well as crossbows are considered prohibited hunting tools. Here, bows may only be used as sports equipment. Although archery is a niche sport in Switzerland, there are around 50 clubs and associations nationwide dedicated to the sport of target shooting on bullseyes and 3D targets.

What types of bows are there?

In general, a bow is a launching device for arrows. Put simply, it is a rod-like object with a string attached to its ends. However, there are still some differences between the various types of bows:

  • Primitive bows are based on traditional or historical models, which is why natural materials - such as yew and ash in Europe - are used for their production. Corresponding bows have a comparatively simple design and do not have an arrow rest.
  • The essential feature of all recurve bows is that their limbs are bent back when in a relaxed state, pointing away from the archer. Due to this design, the models also known as reflex bows have a higher efficiency with the same amount of effort compared to primitive bows. In professional archery, models that allow for the attachment of technical aids such as sights or stabilizers are used, while in recreational archery, especially bare bows without additional equipment are used.
  • The so-called Take-Down-Recurves represent a special type of recurve bows. Unlike ordinary models, such bows are equipped with detachable or collapsible limbs, making them particularly easy to transport. Therefore, Take-Down-Recurves are often used in outdoor settings.
  • In Compound bows, there are rollers or rotating wheels attached to the ends of the limbs, which are called cams or camwheels. This lever mechanism reduces the draw weight on one hand and enables particularly high precision when shooting on the other hand.

Buying a bow: How to find the optimal model

For beginners in archery, three-piece take-down bows are particularly suitable. These allow you to exchange the limbs and adjust the draw weight as needed. However, ordinary recurve bows are also suitable for female and male beginners. If you already have experience in archery and are looking for a high-tech sports device that allows you to shoot particularly accurately, consider purchasing a compound bow.

In addition to the type of bow, there are of course some other relevant purchasing criteria. You should especially consider the following variables:

  • The higher the draw weight (specified in lbs), the more force is required to draw the bow. For individuals starting with archery, it is recommended to start with a draw weight of only 15 to 25 lbs. Since these bows do not require too much force, the shooting process can be better trained.
  • The optimal bow length depends mainly on your height and draw length. As a general rule, the taller you are, the longer the bow should be. Additionally, slightly longer bows are generally more suitable for target shooting, while slightly shorter ones are better for hunting. This is because hunting usually involves shooting from shorter distances.
  • It also raises the question of what accessories are included in the delivery. Inexpensive models may not always come with arrows. Those willing to spend a little more money usually receive a fairly comprehensive set, which often includes a sight, an arrow rest, and an arm guard.
