Bowie Knives

1-24 of 113

Jim Bowie is a legend. Especially with his masterful handling of knives and his legendary fighting style, he has gone down in history. The American celebrated his big breakthrough at the famous Sandbank Duel in Mississippi. With a very special knife, he decided the match in his favor – better known as Bowie knife. The infamous weapon was a gift from his brother and came from the hand of the renowned knife maker James Black. However, the extravagant knife only became a small international celebrity through the cult figure John Rambo, played by Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone.

To this day, the Bowie knife is considered the epitome of the Wild West. After all, it was carried by soldiers in the American Civil War as well as by cowboys and buffalo hunters. It is no coincidence that the Senate of Arkansas declared it the official symbol of the southern US state.

The Bowie knife is the stereotype of the American knife. Nevertheless, its shape is based on the characteristic Spanish folding knives. The trademark of the Bowie knife is the so-called Clip-Point blade, a single-edged blade with a Pandur tip or duck bill. It deliberately tightens the weapon and prepares it for stabbing attacks.

The blade of the Bowie knife is on average 15 centimeters long. However, individual models can also be up to 30 centimeters long. The width is usually between 4 and 5 centimeters. Between the blade and the handle, there is usually a conspicuously large guard made of colored metals or nickel silver. This serves personal safety. It reliably separates the blade and handles from each other.

Blades for the Bowie knife are made from a variety of materials. The stainless steel blade has proven to be particularly reliable. Not only is it extremely durable and robust, but it is also resistant to rust. It maintains a solid edge even during sharpening. Nowadays, steels with higher carbon content are also frequently used. The most expensive variants may feature cutting-edge high-performance steels.

In addition to the blade, the knife handle also plays a crucial role. A firm grip is essential. Especially for outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, and climbing, the handle must be well-equipped. Challenging environmental factors such as heat, cold, or moisture should not immediately throw it off course.

Although the Bowie knife is considered typically American, it was rarely produced in America. The main suppliers came from England. Particularly popular was George Wostenholm & Sons, Washington Works in Sheffield.

The typical tasks of the Bowie knife

The Bowie knife is used as a field, combat, or hunting knife. Elaborately decorated specimens with high-quality engravings and patterns also serve their owner as a piece of jewelry or as a status symbol.
